ARTIST STATEMENT
Energy is found in all Nancy Lorentz's artwork. Her work seeks to evoke a response in the viewer by using composition, line, color and texture to stir emotions, prompt conversations, stimulate the viewer's senses and give rise to a visceral response.
She is deeply inspired by the stunning natural environment of Chesapeake Bay and its feeder rivers and streams that make up an impressive 64,000 square miles of watershed in parts of six states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York, as well as and Washington, D.C. After a pandemic move to Tilghman Island, Maryland, she became immersed in the classic plein air method.
However, she also works in studio and often incorporates glitch effects with the plein air paintings. These effects prompt reflection on the disruptions and complexities inherent in our relationship with the natural environment as we advance at break-neck speed into a high-tech future.
The human form has also always captivated Lorentz - so much so that she has held a parkour certification, co-founded a non-profit to train special populations in the "Art of Movement" from 2015 - 2022. Stepping away from that role, she became more focused on her youngest daughter's Irish Step Dance performances. Lorentz's "Fusion Flow" series is sweet love letter to youthful joy and exuberance she witnessed as an Irish Dance Mom.
